What is a Forex License?
A forex license authorizes a company to provide retail or institutional trading in foreign exchange and, in many regimes, CFDs and other derivatives. It covers brokerage activity: executing client orders, holding client funds, and operating trading platforms. Licensed brokers gain access to payment providers, liquidity, and advertising channels that are closed to unregulated firms.



A Brief History
The modern retail forex market was born after 1971, when the collapse of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates let currencies float freely. Internet trading platforms in the late 1990s opened the market to individuals, and regulators worldwide responded with dedicated licensing regimes for brokers.
